Schools by region

Every state school in England, grouped by where it is. Pick a region to see the towns and authorities in it, or search from your postcode if you already know where you are looking.

There are 962 areas in all: 822 towns, boroughs and villages, and 140 local authorities. Most schools appear under both, and that is deliberate. The town is where a school actually is, which is what matters when you are working out the journey. The local authority is who runs admissions for it, sets the application deadlines and decides appeals, and its boundary can be a long way from anything you would call your area.

The towns are not an official list. They are built from the addresses the Department for Education holds, which means they follow the names people actually use rather than administrative boundaries, and a large town may cover schools that its residents would place in a neighbouring one. Where a school sits near a boundary, searching from a postcode will serve you better than browsing: it works outwards by distance and ignores which side of a line a school falls.

Each area page lists the schools in it with their Ofsted grade, published results and how full they are, and ranks them against each other. That ranking is always local and always within one phase. There is no national league table here, and there will not be: ranking the whole country by attainment mostly measures who attends.
